Finding the Perfect Family Apartment in the City

by Sean Simmmons

Apartments make a good choice for the first-time buyer, as they're typically cheaper than houses and can still offer a decent amount of living space. Of course, in many densely-populated cities, you're left with little choice but to opt for an apartment, since houses are few and far between and are usually prohibitively expensive to boot.

City apartment living is not just for the young, free and single, either. Many people move their families into metropolitan flats quite happily, whether it's for work purposes or simply because they prefer living somewhere busy and exciting.

If you're looking for a family-friendly urban apartment, make sure you follow these tips so you can find somewhere suitable.

Visit at different times

When you're viewing potential apartments during the day, you might find the building and its surrounding area nice and quiet – for a city, at least. But if you make your decision based on daytime noise levels, you could be in for a nasty shock.

Some apartment buildings become quite noisy at night, making them far from ideal for family homes. Make sure you arrange viewings for different times if possible, so you can get a real idea of what it will be like to live there.

Look at the neighbourhood

Don't forget to take into account the local amenities. Not only should you look at what the nearby schools are like, but it's also important that children have somewhere clean and safe to play. Somewhere that's nowhere near any parks but has plenty of decaying, empty buildings nearby is probably not your best choice.

Talk to residents

There's no better way to find out what it's really like to live in an apartment building than to talk to people who already do. Politely knock on a few doors and ask if people would mind talking to you about the area. You'll soon find out whether it's a suitable place for your family or not, as your potential neighbours have nothing to lose or gain by giving you a dishonest view of the place.

Find out what the children think

While you as an adult have to make the final decision, it's a good idea to get the children involved as well. See what they think about the neighbourhood and the building, and make sure they seem happy with the available space. If they're immediately picking out which bedrooms they want and deciding where their toys are going to live, you know you're onto a winner.
